AND THE WINNER IS.......... THE KENDEDA BUILDING, A 2021 WOOD DESIGN AWARD WINNER!
The Kendeda Building for Innovative Sustainable Design at the Georgia Institute of Technology, has won yet another award, the 2021 Wood Design Award! Winner in the Green Building with Wood Category. This is one of two projects that I photographed that won Wood Design Awards this year.
The Kendeda Building is the first timber structure built on the Ga Tech Campus in over 100 years! It is innovative in the way that it reflects back on the history of the school—using old felled trees from the campus as well as recycled materials from renovated buildings—and looks forward as it sets a standard for new construction in a sustainable environmental future. This building houses classrooms, laboratories and a large lecture hall. These are all held together by a two story atrium space that showcases the exceptional beauty and function of wood. It's a great place for students to study, tend to the rooftop garden, have meetings, display artwork, collaborate on projects and, of course, take advantage of that all-important college activity: socializing.
